THE NORTHVILLE CEMETERY MASSACRE (1976)
"Big bad bikers butt heads with small-town police
who are trying to keep the outlaws from further
terrorizing the local residents in this extremely
violent exploitation flick." ~ Sandra Brennan, All
Movie Guide - New York Times
PLOT DESCRIPTION:
Extremely bloody biker film with tons o' violence, real
live bikers, and music by former Monkee Michael
Nesmith! This very International Cult Favorite was
directed by Thomas Dyke and William Dear.
DIRECTED BY: Thomas Dyke & William Dear (1976)
The movie starts out with a shot of an old couple pulled
over on the side of the road to fix a flat tire. Suddenly, the
sound of motorcycles, and on the horizon appears a gang
of filthy dengenerates. They surround the car and menace
the couple inside. Then, to the couple's suprise, they
change the tire for them!
This sets the tone for the rest of the film. The bikers
(played by real life motorcycle club "The Scorpians")
aren't bad people, they just look different. Blah blah blah.
Anyways, the bikers are constantly harrased by the cops,
at one point the are arrested and sentenced to drive
through the car wash on their motorcycles!
A biker wedding is broken up, and a young girl is raped
by a redneck sherrif. The sherrif pins it on the bikers, and
convinces the girl's father to take the law into thier own
hands. They, along with a game hunter, go out biker
hunting.
This is where the fun starts. Two biker's are out side the
clubhouse when out of nowhere a bullet rips through the
body of one of them. The other runs for the door, but he
gets blasted in the doorway.
The first 20-30 minutes of this movie are kinda slow
going. Basically endless shots of the bikers riding around
and some really cheesy jokes. The second half really
picks up quite a bit as we are treated to LOTS of super
bloody slow motion shootings and meyhem. There's a
shootout in a drive-in, and the exellent climax in the
cemetery with 99% of the cast being blown away.
The direction was really good for a low budget American
flick like this, lots of off-kilter framing, and the ample use
of slow motion is very effective in capturing the death
scenes, and there is a lot of them. Almost like a white
trash Wild Bunch.
The acting however is horrendous. The most wooden,
unnatural performances this side of an H.G. Lewis flick.
The worst has to be the father, he delivers his lines like
he's got to take shit REAL bad.
Also, the cool soundtrack was provided by none other
than Michael Nesmith of The Monkees! You know, the
one with the hat. Some good scumy scooter tunes, and
listen to that song in the jail scene with lyrics like "A friend
with weed is a friend indeed."
"Overall, a very entertaining movie with a few goofy
scenes and some truly shit acting. Well worth a few
viewings and a great party movie."
"The Spirits, a bunch of bikers are accused of rape in a
small town. So what, you may say; well it turns out that
these hairy dudes are innocent. Nevertheless, the local
rednecks and police find it's high time for biker genocide
and it all ends in a wild and extremely bloody shootout in a
cemetery, hence the title.
Came out a little late for the biker-movie craze, but it's
highly enjoyable."
